Welcoming Congregation Committee
In March 2006, FUUFHC voted unanimously to become listed with the Unitarian Universalist Association as an officially WELCOMING CONGREGATION to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) people. This vote was the culmination of a two-year process during which our committee looked long and hard at what our fellowship does, and what we ought to do.
The Welcoming Congregation Committee is about the change names! We voted in September 2006 to become a chapter of Interweave, a National UUA-affiliated organization devoted to GLBTQ rights and support. Our mission will be the same, but we’ll have more resources at our fingertips, and our name will roll more easily off the tongue.
We’re already a welcoming congregation! Now what do we do?
We sponsor movie nights and potlucks, keep the fellowship informed of important events and moments in GLBTQ history. We’re about to embark on our first field trip – to Allentown to see a production of A Man of No Importance, a gay-themed play.
We need help with our first big project. We’re looking to work with another gay-friendly church or two in the area to start a chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) in Hunterdon County. There are no local resources for people who are coming to terms with the sexual orientation of loved ones, and that needs to change. But soon you’ll see a call for volunteers to help out with a task or two on this project. We’d love to have lots of you with us on this exciting, important project.
Our committee would always love to have more members. If you’re interested in joining – or in helping out with one of our projects, email co-chair Steve Benoit (sbenoit@patmedia.net).
